A Statement from the

Inflammatory Bowel Disease

May 19, 2006 - Several recent reports have noted that there is an increased incidence of infections and neoplasms in patients taking anti-TNF therapy, Remicade (Infliximab) and HUMIRA (Adalimumab). Much of this information has been well known to the investigators who have performed research with these biologicals, as well as to practicing physicians.  Some parts of the new articles also are being disputed as to possible methodological errors.

Nevertheless, all medications have potential side effects and the treating physician must weigh the observed excellent efficacy of these anti-TNFs versus the possible toxicity. Patients should spend time with their doctors and discuss the pros and cons of these therapies, as well as all therapies being administered for their inflammatory bowel disease.
